BROADWING AND INTERTAINER ANNOUNCE NATION'S FIRST FULL-MARKET
DELIVERY OF VIDEO ON DEMAND VIA DSL TECHNOLOGY
Cincinnati's ZoomTown Subscribers First to Stream High-Quality,
Full-Screen Hollywood Content
CINCINNATI, OH and CULVER CITY, CA, March 27, 2001 - ZoomTown.com,
the wholly owned Internet broadband subsidiary of next-generation
communications provider Broadwing Inc. (NYSE: BRW) and broadband
entertainment on demand provider Intertainer today announced that
ZoomTown will be the nation's first broadband provider to deploy
a video on demand service system wide. ZoomTown has the highest
geographic penetration of broadband subscribers in the country with
more than 40,000 subscribers in Greater Cincinnati.
Beginning April 3, most of ZoomTown's Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
customers in Cincinnati can access Intertainer's outstanding Hollywood
content, including new film releases and classic favorites from
the major movie studios, music videos, popular television programs
and full-length concerts from a variety of artists. This breakthrough
service will be delivered using Microsoft's new high-quality Windows
Media Video 8 with integrated Digital Rights Management technology,
offering a secure near-DVD video experience in bandwidths as low
as 500 kilobits per second.
"We're proving everyday at ZoomTown that we are delivering
world-class applications to our consumers and supporting next-generation
companies," said Mike O'Brien, president of ZoomTown.com. "The
launch of Intertainer's revolutionary service is an exciting example
of the applications that will propel the use and acceptance of consumer
broadband."
The market launch is the culmination of more than a year of joint
market trials, research, and development in the ZoomTown Strategic
Technology and Advanced Research Testing (Z-START) program. Intertainer
was able to improve and enhance its revolutionary video on demand
service through testing from real broadband users in a representative
U.S. city.
"Broadwing's ZoomTown is one of the most progressive DSL platforms
around because they are giving their customers the kind of futuristic,
cutting-edge entertainment service that other people are just talking
about," said Jonathan Taplin, Intertainer president and CEO.
"Intertainer represents the future of in-home viewing, giving
the consumer the convenience, choice and control necessary to really
personalize their entertainment experience."
"Broadwing's ZoomTown and Intertainer are pioneering new ways
of distributing digital video entertainment to the home," said
Will Poole, vice president, Windows Digital Media Division, Microsoft
Corp. "This is a great example of how Windows Media innovations
in video quality and digital rights management are providing the
foundation the industry needs to build new digital media businesses."
How Intertainer works
Beginning April 3, ZoomTown subscribers can view their entertainment
choices by streaming full-screen, high-quality resolution video
with full VCR functionality, allowing them to stop, rewind and fast-forward
selections. Subscribers will see an Intertainer icon on the ZoomTown
home page. By clicking on that icon, subscribers can set up their
own Intertainer account and begin immediately accessing Intertainer's
vast library of content. Each member of a household can create a
username and password, which can be tailored to accommodate spending
limits and restrict access to material that is not content and age
appropriate for children. Intertainer has licensing rights to more
than 65,000 hours of programming from more than 70 content providers,
with 500 hours on the service at any given time.
