LIBERATE TECHNOLOGIES AND INTERTAINER FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE
TO STREAMLINE DEPLOYMENT OF ENTERTAINMENT ON DEMAND
Intertainer Joins Liberate PopTV Program as Infrastructure Partner
SAN CARLOS and LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 30, 2001) -- Liberate
Technologies (Nasdaq: LBRT), a leading provider of software for
the delivery of enhanced television, and Intertainer, the entertainment
on-demand broadband network, today announced a strategic alliance.
The agreement provides for the integration of products, as well
as joint marketing and sales efforts aimed at expanding the availability
of revenue-generating entertainment-on-demand services and simplifying
the deployment of these services over existing networks.
As part of the alliance, Intertainer becomes an infrastructure
partner in the Liberate PopTV Program. Through the PopTV program,
Liberate provides a cooperative and collaborative context in which
end-to-end interactive TV solutions are delivered to network operators.
The PopTV program offers a variety of both technical and marketing
benefits including technical consulting services, certification
programs and joint marketing opportunities.
"Intertainer is a leader in delivering name brand content
in the broadband market," said David Limp, executive vice president
and CSO, Liberate Technologies. "We're happy to work with them
to bring our combined strength to network operators, and help those
operators increase their revenue streams while providing consumers
exciting new iTV offerings."
"Like Intertainer, Liberate believes in the open standard
of IP and HTML," said Jonathan Taplin, Intertainer President
& CEO. "By working together to develop an open platform
for interactive television, we believe we can propel the industry
forward and make innovative applications like video on demand available
on a wide scale."
Under the agreement, Intertainer will integrate its leading VOD
application with the Liberate TV Platform software for both basic
and advanced digital set-top boxes. This makes the host of premium
content available through Intertainer ready for delivery over the
Liberate software platform to a network operator's subscriber base,
including the millions of basic digital set-top boxes currently
deployed.
Intertainer's broadband entertainment on demand service lets digital
cable customers watch a wide variety of entertainment on demand
-- including current movies and classic favorites, music, and television
programs -- delivered within seconds to their TV. Customers can
view their choices in full-screen, high-quality resolution with
complete VCR-functionality, allowing them to stop, rewind and fast-forward
selections.
The combined Liberate and Intertainer offering also leverages integration
work each company has conducted with leading video server solutions
from SeaChange, Concurrent and nCube. Intertainer and Liberate also
will conduct joint sales and marketing efforts to successfully bring
the combined offerings to market.
The Liberate TV Platform software enables cable, satellite and
telecommunication companies to deliver applications that integrate
the Web's interactivity with the richness of TV-based content. Using
open Internet and international broadcast standards, Liberate provides
an efficient client and server platform that combines the best of
both the Internet and television into one compelling, interactive
medium -- enhanced TV. Liberate enables a range of services and
applications from interactive advertising and gaming, to chat and
email, to enhanced programming.
