Team Embeds Interactive Content in "From a Whisper to a Scream" Documentary Showcasing Ireland's History of Rock n' Roll
December 15, 1999
(Culver City, Calif.) -- Intertainer, Inc., the broadband entertainment company that provides on demand service for whatever movies, music and television you want anytime you want on your PC or TV, and Big Band Media, a broadband television program and application developer, announced today that they have developed an interactive prototype of the documentary, From a Whisper to a Scream, for the American Film Institute's AFI-Intel Enhanced TV Workshop.
The AFI-Intel Enhanced TV Workshop helps television's creative community define and create the next generation of enhanced TV as broadcasters move to deliver digital programming. The workshop invites corporate mentors, such as Intertainer, to assist television professionals to create new forms of digital entertainment by incorporating interactive features and functionality to traditional linear television programming. The Intertainer/Big Band Media project is designed to illustrate future possibilities of advanced TV.
From a Whisper to a Scream is a six-part television series that was originally produced by Georgia Bergman and directed by David Heffernan, of Daniel Productions, LTD. It documents the popular rock n' roll scene in Ireland since the beginning of the twentieth century and chronicles the careers of artists such as U2, Van Morrison and Thin Lizzy, among others.
The interactive prototype developed by Intertainer and Big Band Media will be presented for the first time at the AFI on December 13 to participants and advisors of the workshop, and will be on display at Intertainer's booth [#2623] at the Western Cable Show in Los Angeles, December 15-17.
"It is virtually impossible to quantify the contribution that mentors such as Intertainer and Big Band Media have made to the success of the AFI-Intel Enhanced Television Workshop," said Anna Marie Piersimoni, director of enhanced television. "The enthusiasm, expertise, and creativity brought by their remarkable team are fundamental building blocks without which we simply could not hope to mount such an ambitious effort."
Intertainer and Big Band Media together came up with the creative blueprint for the project. Big Band Media then designed and created the screens that display the enhanced opportunities while Intertainer provided creative and technical guidance as well as production support for the project.
The prototype will demonstrate a wide assortment of enhancements that can be embedded into media content. Viewers will be able to use Intertainer's click-thru videoä to delve deeper into the linear programming to browse and purchase related books, videos and CDs; obtain additional biographical information, trace timelines and discographies or access related audio and video clips.
"To truly deliver the greatest possible on demand experience for consumers, Intertainer realized early on that it must incorporate enhanced TV functionality into select programming within its service," said Jonathan Taplin, Intertainer's president and co-CEO. "We're pleased that AFI, one of the most respected entertainment organizations, and Intel, one of the world's leading manufacturers of personal computer, networking and communications products, recognized our efforts in this evolving space and provided Intertainer the incredible opportunity to mentor its enhanced TV workshop."
"By taking advantage of the media-rich nature of Intertainer we were able to create a very dynamic and engaging interactive experience for the viewer," said Patrick Donoghue, president of Big Band Media. "This project was a remarkable collaboration and we look forward to debuting the enhanced version of this documentary to AFI and to the media at the Western Cable Show."
Other corporate sponsors of the AFI-Intel Enhanced TV Workshop include E! Entertainment, Discovery Channel, 1999 Academy Awards, National Geographic, Michael Bovee Productions/KPBS in San Diego, San Francisco's KRON-TV, Fase Productions and Video Free America.
